Hawaii Democratic Sen. Brian Schatz recently criticized Vice President Kamala Harris’ use of certain words, saying they are “unfamiliar” to regular people and that the party should avoid them. Schatz made these comments in an interview with Politico, stating that Harris’ language, including the term “LatinX”, is not widely used.

Schatz also took issue with Harris’ use of phrases such as “center the needs” and “making space for”, saying they are not commonly used in everyday conversation. He argued that the way politicians interact with advocacy groups should also be reevaluated, and that using language that is “maximally popular” with voters is a key part of politics.

Schatz also criticized Harris’ campaign, saying that it was well-executed but ultimately failed because it was a “change election” and Harris did not fit the profile of the change candidate. He concluded that the party should be unapologetic about using language that is appealing to voters, rather than trying to use “magic words” to prove progressivism and political courage.
