Multiple Democrat lawmakers have reported receiving bomb threats on the eve of Thanksgiving, sparking concerns about a potential surge in violent and threatening behavior.
The bomb threats, which began circulating on social media, targeted several prominent Democrat politicians, including Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI), and Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH). The threats were largely posted on Facebook and Twitter, with many users using racial and misogynistic slurs to express their disdain for the targeted lawmakers.
Murphy, who has been a vocal advocate for gun control and has spoken out against political violence, took to Twitter to denounce the threats. “It’s despicable and it’s dangerous,” he wrote. “We should be working together to find common ground, not spreading hate and violence.”
Dingell, who is one of the first women to serve in Congress, also condemned the threats, calling them “sick and disgusting.” “I’m not going to let these threats get in the way of my work to help the people of Michigan and to build a more just and equitable society,” she said.
Ryan, who has been a strong supporter of labor unions and workers’ rights, urged his followers to “stay vigilant” and to report any suspicious activity to the authorities. “We will not be intimidated by these threats,” he wrote. “We will continue to stand up for what is right and just, and we will not be deterred by the haters and the trolls.”
The bomb threats come as the country is gearing up for the Thanksgiving holiday, a time when many people typically come together with family and friends to share a meal and express gratitude. However, the rise in threatening behavior and political violence has left many lawmakers and ordinary citizens feeling anxious and uneasy.
In response to the threats, law enforcement agencies are increasing their presence around Capitol Hill and other government buildings, and many lawmakers are taking extra precautions to ensure their safety.
