The Canon Connections Between Creature Commandos and The Suicide Squad: Implications for David Corenswet’s Superman
The two-episode premiere of Creature Commandos establishes a connection between the DCEU and the DCU through Amanda Waller, Rick Flagg Sr., and Task Force M, which raises exciting implications for David Corenswet’s Superman. Since Creature Commandos’ Task Force M is composed of non-human anti-heroes, Weasel is the only member of Amanda Waller’s Task Force X that returned. This confirms that Rick Flagg Jr.’s death and Project Starfish are part of DCU canon, indicating that DCEU characters like Harley Quinn, Ratcatcher II, and Bloodsport are alive and active in the DCU.
More importantly, this suggests that part of Superman’s DCU backstory is already established. The Suicide Squad’s Bloodsport mystery may have an answer, as Amanda Waller introduces Robert Dubois, aka Bloodsport, saying he sent Superman to the ICU with a Kryptonite bullet. Given that James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad served as a soft-reboot of David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, it is left ambiguous which version of Superman was almost killed by Bloodsport’s attack. However, considering the implications of Creature Commandos, it seems more likely that Bloodsport almost killed David Corenswet’s Superman in the past.
This raises questions about Superman’s backstory, as the DCU’s Superman, played by David Corenswet, must have already encountered several metahumans, vigilantes, and monsters before his solo movie. It is more likely that he would have had a near-death experience with Bloodsport than Henry Cavill’s more seasoned Superman. Moreover, if Bloodsport’s assassination attempt on Superman does not fit his DCU backstory, it would be the first element from The Suicide Squad to be contradicted by the DCU.
The DCU’s Superman’s backstory could make or break The Suicide Squad’s connection to the DCU, as it could lead to a reevaluation of the entire series. The DCU’s first scene already set up Wonder Woman’s debut, despite Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman 3 cancellation. This further complicates the connection to The Suicide Squad, which may need to be rewritten to fit the DCU’s timeline. Ultimately, the connections between Creature Commandos and The Suicide Squad will be crucial in shaping the DCU’s future.
