Daryl Johnston, a former fullback and three-time Super Bowl champion with the Dallas Cowboys, believes that the team should pursue Deion Sanders, the recently retired NFL cornerback, to join their coaching staff.
Johnston, who played with Sanders on the Cowboys’ 1995 Super Bowl XXVII team, thinks that Sanders would be an excellent addition to the Cowboys’ coaching staff, particularly as a defensive backs coach.
“I think Deion would be fantastic,” Johnston said in an interview with 105.3 The Fan. “He’s a guy who has a tremendous passion for the game, and he’s a guy who has a tremendous understanding of the game. He’s been around the game a long time, and he’s got a lot of wisdom to share.”
Johnston praised Sanders’ ability to connect with players and motivate them to perform at their best. He also noted that Sanders’ playing experience and knowledge of the game would be valuable assets for the Cowboys’ young defensive backs.
“Deion has a way of connecting with players, and he’s got a way of getting the best out of them,” Johnston said. “He’s a guy who can relate to players, and he’s a guy who can motivate them to be their best. And he’s got the playing experience to back it up, so he’s got credibility with the players.”
Johnston also suggested that Sanders could be a good fit for the Cowboys’ defensive scheme, which is designed to create turnovers and score points off of them.
“Deion’s always been a guy who’s been about creating turnovers and scoring points off of them,” Johnston said. “And that’s exactly what our defense is trying to do. So, I think he’d be a great fit for our defense.”
While there has been no official word on whether the Cowboys will pursue Sanders for a coaching position, Johnston believes that the team should take a serious look at him.
“I think it’s definitely worth exploring,” Johnston said. “Deion’s a guy who’s got a lot to offer, and I think he’d be a great addition to our coaching staff.”
