A heated exchange erupted in the European Parliament during a meeting on Tuesday, as a Danish member of parliament criticized President Donald Trump’s repeated attempts to acquire Greenland.
Anders Vistisen, a member of the European Parliament, addressed Trump directly, saying, “Dear President Trump, listen very carefully. Greenland has been part of the Danish kingdom for 800 years. It’s an integrated part of our country. It is not for sale. Let me put it in words you might understand. Mr. Trump, fuck off.”
Vistisen’s outburst drew a rebuke from the European Parliament’s vice president, Nicolae Stefanuta, who warned that the term used was not allowed in the parliament and would result in consequences. Stefanuta emphasized the importance of maintaining a respectful tone in the institution, even when expressing disagreement.
Meanwhile, Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede reiterated the territory’s stance, stating that it has no intention of becoming part of the United States and emphasized the importance of maintaining its independence. “We want to be a strong partner for the U.S.,” Egede said. “We will always be part of NATO and we have a lot to offer in terms of cooperation, but we don’t want to be Americans.”
