Carry On’s meet-cute moments have always left viewers grinning, and the latest episode is no exception. But behind the scenes, filming this romantic comedy’s most memorable moments was no easy feat. Danielle Deadwyler, one of the show’s stars, opens up to us about the wild car crash scene that left everyone involved shaken but thrilled.
For the fans, it’s hard to imagine anything quite as thrilling as the scene where the main characters, friends, and love interests, embark on a wild road trip that takes them through the ups and downs of romance, friendship, and self-discovery. And trust us, it’s not just the fictional characters who were on a rollercoaster ride during the production of this episode.
We caught up with Danielle, who plays Kate, one of the four main characters, to get the real story behind that unforgettable car crash. “Filming the car scene was actually quite the experience,” she reveals. “We were all squished in this tiny car, and it was like a rollercoaster in there.”
The car smash was actually staged, but it felt incredibly realistic, thanks to the brilliant work of the special effects team. “They made it look like the car was actually crashing, and we believed it was actually happening,” recalls Danielle. “We were all scared, but in a good way – like, ‘Wow, this is actually really intense!’ – and that came through on camera.”
Of course, when you’re performing in front of cameras, leaving your inhibitions behind – or at least having to put on an act – something can go awry. But for Danielle, it didn’t take much for her to tap into her character’s emotions. “With this show, it’s so much about vulnerability and being honest, so for me, I could easily access my emotions and be present in the moment.”
When asked about what made this particular scene so memorable, Danielle points to the manner in which their tight-knit cast and crew came together to bring it to life. “It’s because everyone was part of the immersion; we were all in this together – quite literally, too!”
Danielle also spoke about how her cast mates’ involvement made the experience as authentic as it gets. “Taye [Diggs, who plays the other main character, Marcus] actually got in on the car crush, which was really funny to see,” she says. “I remember thinking, ‘This might get real, right now!’ Just the experience of shooting that scene made it real, you know? We were all genuinely scared, even though we were acting… But what made it so memorable most of all was the energy and collective effort that went into it – that was just magic.”
