Cowboys Deny McCarthy Interview Request With Bears
Despite speculation surrounding Mike McCarthy’s future with the Dallas Cowboys, owner Jerry Jones made it clear Tuesday that the veteran coach won’t be heading to Chicago. Sources close to the situation told ESPN that the Cowboys have denied the Chicago Bears permission to interview McCarthy for their head coaching vacancy.
The news comes as McCarthy’s contract with the Cowboys is set to expire next week. After Dallas’ season finale loss to the Washington Commanders, Jones stopped short of confirming McCarthy’s return next season. “Mike’s one of the best coaches that I think there is,” Jones said. “He was made to coach here. He’s done absolutely nothing to diminish my opinion of him as a coach.”
McCarthy, who led the Cowboys to the playoffs in three consecutive seasons before this season’s 7-10 record, has expressed his desire to return. Jones, however, has not committed to an extension, saying decisions on the head coach’s future will be made in the next few days and weeks.
In related news, the Bears are searching for a new head coach after firing Matt Eberflus earlier in the week.
