As the Wicked film’s digital home release hits stores, lead actress Cynthia Erivo and director Jon M. Chu sat down with Variety to discuss the making of the film. In this revealing interview, Erivo shared one of the most poignant and heartbreaking moments that didn’t make the final cut: the quiet and honest conversation between Elphaba (Erivo) and Boq (Ethan Slater).

In this deleted scene, Elphaba and Boq share their true feelings for others before Elphaba’s departure to the Emerald City. Erivo and co-star Ariana Grande-Butera revealed that they both fell in love with the train station scene, particularly the line “Sorry, I misunderstood. I thought we were being honest.”

Erivo praised the scene, stating, “I loved that moment because it felt like people were holding her up. Those are the three scenes that I hate that they’re gone, but they’re there now, so you can see them.”

The deleted scene between Elphaba and Boq has become one of the most talked-about moments in the Wicked film. The brief interaction between the two characters leaves a lasting impact, showcasing their struggles and vulnerabilities. Erivo also mentioned another deleted scene, the final conversation between Elphaba, her father, and Madame Morrible, which she misses greatly.

Arian Grande-Butera echoed Erivo’s sentiments, stating that the train station scene was one of her favorite lines, and Nancy Banks, her acting coach, had marked the entire scene with hearts due to its emotional impact.

While the film has received widespread acclaim, the absence of these scenes leaves fans eager to see the full, untamed version of Wicked. The digital home release of the film provides an opportunity for audiences to experience these deleted scenes firsthand, giving a deeper understanding of the complex characters and their relationships.
