Cynthia Erivo Responds to “Woke Hire” Comments
In a new interview with Elle, Wicked star Cynthia Erivo has addressed comments that she was a “woke hire” for the hit musical. The film, based on Gregory Maguire’s Wizard of Oz prequel novel, follows the story of Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West, and her unlikely friendship with Glinda.
Erivo, who will reprise her role as Elphaba in the upcoming sequel Wicked: For Good, explained that she had to audition for the part, just like everyone else. She expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to play the character, saying, “I’m glad they got to be sure about the choice. It allows me to take this, and to know that I had to work really hard for it.”
The two-time Oscar nominee also pointed out her previous work history as a reason why she was a good fit for the part. Erivo has a background in music, having starred onstage in the musical version of The Color Purple, which earned her a Tony Award. She emphasized that her experience as a great singer and actor made her a suitable choice for the role.
Erivo’s performance as Elphaba has received widespread acclaim, and she has already earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. The film is set to be released on November 21.
The “woke hire” comments are seen as unfair by many, considering the extensive audition process Erivo underwent to secure the role. Erivo’s performance is one of the best parts of the film, with her rendition of the song “Defying Gravity” being particularly memorable.
While opinions may vary, Erivo’s talent and dedication have made her a standout in the film. Her performance is a testament to her hard work and dedication to her craft.
