Picture twinkling lights reflected on the Danube River as you sail into port, steps away from the merriment of a festive Christmas market. European Christmas markets have been a tradition since the Middle Ages, and river cruises make planning easy, stopping in six places in four countries, including Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna, Linz, Krems, and Passau.
With the ship mainly traveling at night, you’ll wake up in a new port each day. Enjoy nightly entertainment on board, from Christmas caroling to a performance by the Vienna Boys’ Choir. Viking is not the only cruise line that sails the Danube during the festive season, with Ama Waterways, Avalon Waterways, and Uniworld among others offering similar itineraries and market excursions.
In each port, the markets offer a unique experience, from the historic settings to the decor, food, and shopping. With thousands of Christmas markets in Europe, a river cruise makes it easy to plan and visit multiple markets. Explore markets at your own pace, or sign up for an excursion organized by the ship. In Vienna, visit the Christkindlmarkt near St. Stephen’s Cathedral, and the Belvedere Market and the pedestrian shopping area near Stephansplatz, with its gorgeous outdoor lights.
In Budapest, the main market is in Vörösmarty Square, connecting to another market along the city’s “Fashion Street.” Bratislava’s Christmas markets started in the 1990s but do a great job of creating a fun, traditional atmosphere, with a focus on food and drinks. Passau’s main market has a great mix of food stalls and handmade gifts, including a wooden owl carved from the Black Forest.
Part of the fun is trying the local specialties, such as sausages, cheese, and sweet treats, as well as the traditional Glühwein, a warm spiced red wine, usually served in a commemorative cup. Markets carry everything from knitted scarves and carved ornaments to games and cheese boards, with many vendors accepting credit cards. Bring your own shopping bag or tote and consider packing an extra suitcase if you plan to buy a lot.
