The Sound of Music: A Controversial Classic

Though it may be one of the most acclaimed movie musicals of all time, The Sound of Music is not without its controversy. Released in 1965, the film tells the story of Maria, a young nun who is sent to work as a governess for the seven von Trapp children in 1938 Salzburg, Austria, where she falls in love with the steely Captain von Trapp. The film is based on a true story, adapting the real Maria von Trapp’s 1949 memoir, The Story of the von Trapp Family Singers.

Despite its enduring popularity, The Sound of Music has faced criticism for its portrayal of the rise of Nazi power in Austria. The film takes creative liberties for dramatic purposes, but some argue that it oversimplifies a sensitive subject. The von Trapp family’s story is one of escape and survival, but the film does not examine the war’s impact on Jewish people or other groups targeted by the Nazis.

One of the most significant inaccuracies in the film is the portrayal of the von Trapp family’s escape from Austria. In reality, the family did not flee in secrecy, but rather left via train and did not have to pretend anything was wrong. This inaccuracy has been criticized for using Nazis as stock villains instead of delving into the true nature of the party and its harm to many people.

Other inaccuracies in the film include Maria’s initial reason for coming to the von Trapp estate, her marriage to Captain von Trapp, and the number of von Trapp children. Despite these inaccuracies, the film’s message remains inspiring and relevant. The song “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” is indicative of the film’s message, as Mother Abbess tells Maria to follow her dreams and beliefs, even if they are not popular.

The Sound of Music has won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and remains an enduring favorite, particularly around the holidays. While it may have its controversies, the film’s message and music continue to captivate audiences to this day.
