The Cowboys’ 2024 Season: McCarthy’s Job on the Line
During their five-game losing streak in the middle of the season, it seemed likely that the Cowboys would move on from coach Mike McCarthy after the season. However, despite a banged-up squad, Dallas won four of their final seven games, impressing team owner Jerry Jones.
Several Cowboys players, including Dak Prescott and Micah Parsons, publicly backed McCarthy’s return, praising the job he and his staff did given the numerous obstacles they faced.
The Cowboys’ 7-10 record in 2024 marked their second season without making the playoffs under McCarthy, who had led the team to three consecutive 12-5 finishes from 2021-23.
The biggest question surrounding the team heading into the season was whether McCarthy could finally lead the Cowboys past their repeated playoff failures. The early-season collapse and third-place finish in the NFC East ensured that query would not be answered this year.
Now, the fate of McCarthy’s job is in the hands of Jones. If negotiations collapse, McCarthy is likely to garner interest from several teams with openings. The Chicago Bears have already requested to interview the former Green Bay Packers head coach, but the Cowboys denied their request.
