Dallas Cowboys Reportedly in Talks with Former Jets Head Coach Robert Saleh After Parting Ways with Mike McCarthy
The Dallas Cowboys have reportedly set their sights on former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh, who was let go by owner Woody Johnson just five games into the season. The Cowboys mutually agreed to part ways with head coach Mike McCarthy on Monday, just days after his contract expired, despite his 7-10 record this season. McCarthy had led the Cowboys to the playoffs in each of the past three seasons with a 12-5 record.
The team is expected to interview Saleh, their first known request, according to the NFL Network. Saleh previously served as the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers and has also been scheduled to interview with the Las Vegas Raiders and is considered the favorite for the vacancy with the Jacksonville Jaguars, replacing Doug Pederson.
The Jets went 2-3 under Saleh before he was fired and replaced by interim head coach and defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich. Despite his 20-36 record with two different quarterbacks, including first-round pick Zach Wilson and four-time league MVP Aaron Rodgers, the team’s struggles continued to worsen, leading to another missed playoff season.
Other names mentioned in the Cowboys’ search for a new head coach include former players Deion Sanders and Jason Witten. The team is looking for a coach to lead them back to the top of the NFC East division, and Saleh’s defensive expertise could be the answer to their prayers.
