A new poll by the Angus Reid Institute has revealed a significant shift in Canadian politics, with the Liberal Party of Canada falling to third place nationally. The survey found that 45% of Canadians intend to vote for the Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre, which represents a 2% increase since the poll’s last iteration.
The New Democratic Party (NDP), under the leadership of Jagmeet Singh, gained 1% support, bringing their total to 21%. Meanwhile, the Liberal Party, led by Justin Trudeau, lost five points and now stands at 16%.
The Conservatives saw their support grow or remain stable across the country, except in Alberta and Ontario, where it decreased by 1%. In contrast, the Liberals suffered a significant decline in support, with the greatest losses seen in Quebec (-8%) and British Columbia (-6%).
The poll also revealed a significant drop in support for Prime Minister Trudeau himself. Among those who previously voted Liberal, only 7% strongly approve of his performance, while 39% moderately approve. A quarter of former Liberal voters now strongly disapprove of Trudeau’s leadership.
Among all voters, Trudeau’s popularity has fallen to 22%, the lowest point of his tenure as prime minister. The poll, conducted between December 27 and 30, 2024, surveyed a representative sample of 2,261 Canadian adults who are members of the Angus Reid Forum. The results suggest a significant shake-up in Canadian politics and may have major implications for the country’s upcoming election.
