Lions Safety Brian Branch Keys Defensive Strategy for Slowing Washington’s Jayden Daniels
To shut down Washington’s sensational rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, Lions safety Brian Branch believes the Detroit defense must condense the pocket, limiting the time and space Daniels has to make plays. Branch, who faced Daniels during his college days, knows Daniels is an exceptional quarterback who resembles Lamar Jackson with his ability to extend plays and make throws.
During the Commanders’ impressive 12-5 season, Daniels set rookie records for completion percentage, threw for over 3,500 yards, and added 891 rushing yards, the most ever for a rookie. He is expected to play beyond his years on Saturday and make big plays.
The Lions defense, meanwhile, has played spectacularly this season despite injury setbacks. Branch has been a key contributor, racking up 109 tackles, four interceptions, and 16 passes defended, among other stats. As he prepares to face the Commanders, Branch and his teammates are focused on silencing their own doubts rather than listening to external noise about their chances of success.
Branch says the vibes on the Lions are “immaculate” and that his team is “hungrier than ever” after their disappointing performance in last year’s NFC Championship game. Instead of paying attention to the accolades and attention surrounding their club, the team is focused on proving to themselves what they’re capable of and leaving the noise outside.
