Coca-Cola Recalls Beverages in Europe Due to Excess Chlorate Content
Coca-Cola has announced that it is recalling a range of its beverages produced in a Belgian facility due to exceptionally high chlorate content. The recall affects certain cans and bottles of Coca-Cola, Sprite, Fanta, Fuze Tea, Minute Maid, Nalu, Royal Bliss, and Tropico, with zero and light versions included.
The recall affects products with production codes ranging from 328 GE to 338 GE, which can be found on the bottom of the can or on the neck/label of the glass bottle.
Consumers are advised not to consume the affected products and return them to the place of purchase for a refund. Chlorate, which is derived from chlorine disinfectants commonly used in water treatment and food processing, can pose serious health risks, particularly to infants and children. High levels of chlorate consumption can impair thyroid function and inhibit iodine uptake.
Coca-Cola has acknowledged the recall, stating that an independent expert analysis has found the risk to consumers to be “very low.” The company has also apologized to consumers and its business partners, saying it will work to ensure that all products meet the company’s quality and safety standards.
