I would really love to see Scarlett Johansson rejoin the MCU in Avengers: Doomsday, especially now that Chris Evans has also joined the huge cast for 2026’s highly-anticipated Russo brothers crossover. Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a. Black Widow, was one of the MCU’s longest-running, and one of my favorite, superheroes prior to her death in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. While 2021’s retrospective Black Widow gave her one last ride in the MCU, I felt as though the movie failed to do Natasha Romanoff justice.
I’ve always considered Black Widow to be one of the most insulted and wasted heroes in the MCU, and I always wanted Scarlett Johansson to get more attention. Natasha Romanoff’s death and the failures of Black Widow left me wanting a lot more, and, thankfully, I think there’s now a clear way that Marvel Studios can finally give Johansson the focus she deserves.
Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige confirmed that Robert Downey Jr. will be rejoining the MCU at 2024’s SDCC, set to bring Doctor Doom to life in Avengers: Doomsday, which will ensure that Tony Stark’s emotional sacrifice from Endgame remains untouched. Now, Chris Evans will be reuniting with Downey Jr. in Doomsday, though we’re still not sure which character Evans will be playing in the upcoming crossover event. While none of them have yet been confirmed, I think it’s likely the other members of the original Avengers team will join them.
I have no doubt that Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner, and Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton, even after his recent recovery, will have a role in Avengers: Doomsday. Alongside Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, this means all the male components of the MCU’s original Avengers team from 2012’s eponymous The Avengers will be reuniting. This just makes me want to see Scarlett Johansson come back to the MCU even more, as it would be a horrible shame for her to be left out of this epic reunion.
I believe Scarlett Johansson would be a huge draw for Avengers: Doomsday, given her iconic role as Black Widow, although I would love to see her in a new role. She wouldn’t necessarily need to return as Black Widow; she could play a completely new Marvel character. There’s been speculation that the original Avengers cast will play villains in Avengers: Doomsday, with Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom and Evans as HYDRA’s Captain America, which opens the door for Johansson to play a twisted version of her MCU hero.
I think it would be great to see Scarlett Johansson suit up as a completely new Marvel character, allowing her to explore a fresh and exciting role. The possibilities are endless, from a comic-accurate version of Black Widow to a more villainous character like the Blonde Phantom or someone connected to Doctor Doom, such as Cynthia Von Doom or Valeria Richards. Avengers: Doomsday is gearing up to be one of Marvel Studios’ biggest and most exciting projects, and I am desperate for Scarlett Johansson to be involved.
