Champions of 2024: A Review of the Year’s Winning Sports Teams

Sports have given fans a little bit of everything in 2024. Two back-to-back champions, some of the most dominant tournaments and playoff runs seen in their respective sports, and almost giving fans an historic reverse sweep.

Here are all the champions that were crowned in the calendar year:

NFL: The Kansas City Chiefs won their second consecutive Super Bowl, with Patrick Mahomes winning his third career Super Bowl MVP award.

NBA: The Boston Celtics were dominant, going 64-18 in the regular season and 16-3 in the playoffs, winning the NBA Finals 4-1 over the Dallas Mavericks. Jaylen Brown won Finals MVP.

NHL: The Florida Panthers won their first Stanley Cup in franchise history, defeating the Edmonton Oilers 2-1 in Game 7, avenging their 2023 Stanley Cup Final loss to the Vegas Golden Knights.

MLB: The Los Angeles Dodgers won their eighth World Series in franchise history, coming back to defeat the New York Yankees 4-3 in the series. Freddie Freeman was named World Series MVP.

College Football: Michigan won the national championship, finishing 15-0 and winning the College Football Playoff. Jim Harbaugh led the team to their 12th national title.

WNBA: The New York Liberty won their first WNBA title, defeating the Minnesota Lynx 3-2 in the WNBA Finals. Jonquel Jones was named WNBA Finals MVP.

Men’s College Basketball: The Connecticut Huskies won their second consecutive national championship, going 37-3 in the regular season and winning all their tournament games by 14 points or more.

Women’s College Basketball: The South Carolina Gamecocks went undefeated, finishing 38-0 and winning their third national title.

NASCAR: Joey Logano won his third NASCAR Cup Series championship, beating Ryan Blaney by .330 seconds in the NASCAR Cup Series Championship race.

MLS: The LA Galaxy won their sixth MLS Cup title, defeating the New York Red Bulls 2-1. GastĂłn Brugman was named MLS Cup MVP.

NWSL: The Orlando Pride won their first NWSL title, defeating the Washington Spirit 1-0 in the championship game. Barbra Banda scored the lone goal in the win.
