Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of President John F. Kennedy and a former U.S. ambassador, has written a letter to lawmakers urging them not to confirm her cousin Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as the next Secretary of Health and Human Services.
Kennedy referred to her cousin as a “predator” and said he is “unqualified” to hold the position. She claimed that he lacks relevant government, financial, and medical experience and has a “dangerous” and “willfully misinformed” view on vaccines.
Kennedy also accused her cousin of being addicted to attention and power, and of exploiting his family’s tragedies for publicity. She stated that he has shown a willingness to “misrepresent, lie, and cheat his way through life.”
In the letter, Kennedy also voiced her concern about her cousin’s views on drugs, saying that he has been involved in drug use and has encouraged others to do the same. She claimed that he has put people down a path of addiction and has even been known to keep birds of prey as pets, such as hawks and owls.
Kennedy acknowledged that her cousin has since found his way out of his addiction and is working on his personal issues, but she believes that he is not suitable to be in a position of power and responsibility such as the head of the HHS.
A confirmation hearing for RFK Jr. is scheduled to take place this week, where he will face questions from lawmakers on various issues related to his nomination. However, only one of the Senate committees will vote on his nomination.
