Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Expected to Resign Amid Pressure from Party and Polls
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to announce his resignation as early as Monday, according to a report by The Globe and Mail. The move comes as a result of increasing pressure from his party to step down, with Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland having recently resigned due to policy disagreements.
Recent polls have shown the Liberal party is set for a crushing loss in the next election, which is expected to be held by October 2025, against the Conservative Party. The resignation is also expected to spark calls for a snap election to select a new administration to deal with US President Donald Trump over the next four years.
Sources close to the matter claim that Trudeau had discussed interim Prime Minister Dominic LeBlanc taking over as interim leader, but this would not be possible if LeBlanc were to also pursue the Liberal party leadership. A decision on Trudeau’s potential successor is yet to be made.
