Canadian leader meets Trump at Mar-a-Lago summit

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith Met with President-elect Trump, Discussed US-Canada Energy Relationship

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith met with President-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida and discussed the “mutual importance” of the U.S.-Canadian energy relationship and the hundreds of thousands of American jobs supported by Albertan exports.

In a post on her X account, Smith wrote that she and Trump had a “friendly and constructive conversation” in which she emphasized the importance of the U.S.-Canadian energy relationship. She noted that “hundreds of thousands of American jobs are supported by energy exports from Alberta.”

Smith continued to say that she would continue to engage in constructive dialogue and diplomacy with the incoming administration and elected federal and state officials from both parties to further Alberta’s and Canada’s interests.

The U.S. and Canada have a long-standing relationship, with the two nations being part of one of the largest economic partnerships in history. Smith emphasized the importance of preserving their independence while growing their partnership for the benefit of Canadians and Americans for generations to come.

The meeting comes as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his plan to resign, amid growing pressure from within his own Liberal Party and heightened criticisms over his handling of the economy and threats levied by Trump.
