In a surprising twist, a group of alleged shoplifters in California were left stunned after finding out that stealing from a store can now land them with a felony charge. The group, comprised of three friends, were recently caught on camera stealing from a local department store in San Diego.

According to eyewitnesses, the trio entered the store, made their way to the electronics section, and then began grabbing various high-end items, including a state-of-the-art smart TV and a pair of designer watches. The group was seen chatting and laughing amongst themselves as they made their way out of the store, completely unaware that they were being followed by the store’s security cameras.

It wasn’t until they were apprehended and taken to the local police station for questioning that the full extent of their actions became clear. The friends were horrified to learn that, due to new legislation, shoplifting had been upgraded to a felony in the state of California, and that they each faced up to five years in prison.

“I just couldn’t believe it,” said 22-year-old Emily, one of the alleged shoplifters. “I’ve always known it was wrong, but I guess I just never thought I’d get caught. And I definitely didn’t know it was a felony!”

Her friend, 24-year-old Mike, added, “We didn’t mean to hurt anyone. We just wanted to get some nice stuff for ourselves. I never thought I’d end up in jail over it.”

The trio now faces a possible five years behind bars, as well as hefty fines and restitution to the store. The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the severe consequences that can come with committing shoplifting, and the importance of respecting and complying with the law.

The case has raised questions about the suitability of the new legislation, which has attracted criticism for being too harsh. However, law enforcement officials are standing by their decision, citing the need to deter crimes like shoplifting and protect the rights of law-abiding citizens.

In the meantime, the three alleged shoplifters are left to face the consequences of their actions, and are anxiously waiting to see what the future holds.
