The LIV-PGA Rivalry Continues: McIlroy and Scheffler Take on DeChambeau and Koepka in Las Vegas Showdown
The LIV-PGA rivalry reached a new level as Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, both members of the PGA Tour, took on Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka, who defected from the PGA Tour to join LIV Golf, in a two-on-two match in Las Vegas on Tuesday.
The event, which is being held at the Shadow Creek Golf Club, marks the first installation of “The Showdown” series. The four golfers have a total of 13 major championship victories between them, with five from Koepka, four from McIlroy, and two each from Scheffler and DeChambeau.
DeChambeau, the reigning U.S. Open champion, made a memorable shot on the second hole, smashing a golf ball that had 324 yards of carry. The shot unfortunately hit Scheffler’s father, who was watching the event from the course.
McIlroy and DeChambeau have a history, with McIlroy lamenting the players who left the PGA Tour for LIV Golf. DeChambeau, who shared the driving range with McIlroy before the match, cracked a joke about McIlroy’s choke job at the U.S. Open, where he bogeyed three of his final four holes and missed two putts that were both inside of three feet.
McIlroy admitted he wanted to “go up against Bryson and try to get him back for what he did to me at the U.S. Open.” DeChambeau responded by saying, “Well, to be fair, you kind of did it to yourself.”
