Employee of Brooklyn Homeless Shelter Stabbed to Death Outside Facility
A 35-year-old employee of a Brooklyn homeless shelter was brutally stabbed to death outside the facility on Thursday night. The incident occurred at a Days Inn hotel that had been converted into a shelter by the city on East New York Avenue in the Brownsville neighborhood.
The employee was stabbed multiple times in the neck and abdomen and was bleeding profusely in the lobby when medics arrived. He was pronounced dead at Brookdale Medical Center.
Police are seeking a male suspect, described as wearing a black baseball cap and ski mask, who was last seen fleeing the scene. The motive for the attack is unknown, but the area has seen a rise in violent crime in recent years, with several hotels converted into homeless shelters during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The incident is the latest in a string of violent crimes in New York City, which has been grappling with a surge in illegal immigration and a lack of resources to care for the newcomers. Since April 2022, an estimated 220,000 migrants have arrived in the city, with over 58,000 currently being cared for by taxpayers.
The city’s mayor, Eric Adams, has repeatedly expressed frustration with the federal government and has called for more resources to help address the issue.
