Former NFL Quarterback Brett Favre Weighs in on Proposed Bill to Keep Transgender Athletes Out of Women’s and Girls Sports
NFL Hall of Famer Brett Favre has taken a stance on a bill being pushed through Congress that aims to keep transgender athletes out of women’s and girls sports. Favre shared a Fox News interview with Sage Steele and Riley Gaines, crediting Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., for introducing the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act.
The proposed bill would maintain that Title IX treats gender as “recognized based solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth” and does not adjust it to apply to gender identity. It would ban federal funding from athletic programs that allow biological men to participate in women’s and girls sports.
Favre expressed his support for the bill, saying, “Good on those officials trying to fix this. There’s a clear biological difference between men and women.”
This is not the first time Favre has spoken out on the issue of transgender athletes in women’s sports. In 2021, he spoke out against New Zealand’s transgender weightlifter, Laurel Hubbard, who became the first transgender woman to qualify for the Olympics.
Favre has also made his stance clear on individual athletes, such as transgender BMX rider Chelsea Wolfe, who was selected as an alternate for Team USA’s BMX freestyle event. Favre believes that transgender athletes should not be allowed to compete in events and leagues designated for women and girls.
According to a Gallup poll, nearly 70% of Americans oppose allowing biological men to compete in women’s sports, and a survey conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago found that 65% of respondents think transgender athletes of both sexes should rarely or never be allowed to participate in sports leagues that align with their preferred gender identity.
