BRAZIL’S GOVERNMENT EXPRESSES OUTRAGE OVER ‘DEGRADING’ DEPORTATION FLIGHT

Ad

Brazil’s government has expressed outrage and demanded an explanation from the United States over the “degrading treatment” of dozens of immigrants who were deported from the US and arrived in Brazil in handcuffs. The plane, which landed in the northern city of Manaus, carried 88 Brazilians, including children with autism and people with respiratory problems.

The Brazilian Justice Ministry said that the treatment of the passengers was “a flagrant disregard for the fundamental rights of Brazilian citizens” and that the government will request explanations from the US government about the incident.

According to reports, the passengers were not given water, were subjected to extreme heat and were forced to spend four hours on the plane without air conditioning due to technical issues. Some people even fainted during the flight.

The Brazilian government has ordered the US officials to immediately remove the handcuffs and has mobilized a Brazilian Air Force aircraft to transport the deportees to their final destination in a safe and dignified manner.

The incident comes as the Trump administration has announced a crackdown on illegal immigration and has begun deploying troops to the southern US border. Brazil is one of the countries that has been affected by the new policies, with several deportation flights already having taken place since Monday.
