Billionaire Mark Cuban, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and author Stephen King are among the latest high-profile users to join Bluesky, the social media platform founded by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey. Despite no longer being affiliated with Dorsey, Bluesky has seen a surge in growth, now boasting over 28 million users.
The platform’s popularity can be attributed to its unique approach to social media, which prioritizes decentralization, user control, and a lack of algorithm-driven content. Unlike traditional social media platforms, Bluesky does not host ads and instead, relies on a subscription model and services in its developer ecosystem to generate revenue.
Bluesky’s vision is to give users a greater say in what content they see, allowing them to build their own algorithms and curate their feeds. The platform also allows users to export their data, making it “billionaire-proof” and giving users more control over their online presence.
However, the platform has faced challenges, including an increase in impersonator accounts and scammers, with 6.48 million reports submitted to its moderation service in 2024, compared to 358,000 in 2023. Despite these hurdles, Bluesky CEO Jay Graber remains committed to the platform’s mission, stating, “We’re going to give users better experiences, add new features, and do a subscription model as well as services in the developer ecosystem.”
