Blue State City Residents Demand More Police to Combat Rising Crime

A petition has been launched by a resident of Vallejo, California, urging the state to deploy California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers to the city to combat rising crime rates. The resident, Paula Conley, cites a lack of police presence and a need for more manpower to address issues such as car sideshows, drug crime, shootings, and shoplifting, which have made life in Vallejo more dangerous.

In response to the petition, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) has announced that it will increase its presence in Vallejo. CHP Deputy Commissioner Ezery Beauchamp stated that the agency has been working with the Vallejo Police Department since July, making 600 traffic enforcement stops and 32 arrests.

Governor Gavin Newsom has also acknowledged the request, but noted that city leaders must take responsibility for addressing the police staffing woes. Newsom emphasized that the state is not willing to provide free police services, and that local authorities need to take action to address their own staffing issues.

Vallejo City Manager Andrew Murray stated that the city respects the community’s right to voice their concerns and welcomes ongoing dialogue about public safety in Vallejo. The city is currently exploring options for law enforcement support, including contracting with the Solano County Sheriff’s Office.

The Solano County Sheriff’s Office is also set to submit a service proposal to the city of Vallejo, with the possibility of a contract for services being signed in the future.

Residents have expressed concerns over the lack of police presence and the impact it has had on their quality of life. A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that he has seen a significant decline in the city’s safety since relocating from San Francisco and fears for his personal safety.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has been involved in several initiatives to boost public safety, including sending officers to Oakland earlier this year to address crime. The governor has also announced plans to quadruple the number of shifts CHP officers conduct in the city of Oakland.
