Bill Belichick Named Head Coach of University of North Carolina

Bill Belichick’s Foray into College Football

Belichick’s foray into college football will be his first, marking a significant departure from his 24-year tenure in the NFL. The legendary coach, who led the New England Patriots to nine Super Bowl appearances and six wins, has accepted the head coaching position at the University of North Carolina (UNC).

Belichick’s coaching career began in 1975, when he took an entry-level position with the Baltimore Colts, skipping college ranks altogether. He worked his way up the ranks, becoming defensive coordinator for the New York Giants under Bill Parcells. He then moved to the Cleveland Browns, serving as head coach from 1991 to 1995, before returning to the NFL as an assistant for the New England Patriots and New York Jets.

In 2000, Belichick took over as head coach of the Patriots, leading the team to nine Super Bowl appearances and six wins, cementing his status as one of the greatest coaches in NFL history. However, after the departure of Tom Brady, the Patriots’ success waned, and Belichick and the team parted ways at the end of the 2023 season.

Belichick’s move to UNC marks a new chapter in his coaching career, with the goal of turning the Tar Heels into a collegiate powerhouse. He is 26 wins away from tying Don Shula’s record for most regular-season wins in NFL history and 14 games behind Shula’s record for most regular-season and playoff wins by a head coach. Despite this, his move to college will likely end his chances of surpassing Shula’s records.
