Nearly 25 years after famously resigning as head coach of the New York Jets, Bill Belichick reportedly considered taking over the team again. According to The Athletic, Belichick’s “inner circle” had informal talks with the Jets, as well as other NFL teams, before ultimately deciding to join the University of North Carolina (UNC) as head coach.
Belichick cited questions about ownership as the reason for his initial 2000 resignation from the Jets, and it has been speculated that he had concerns about Woody Johnson’s ownership of the team, which he still maintains. Belichick did have success as the Jets’ defensive coordinator under Bill Parcells, but ultimately chose not to return to the team.
The Jets have been struggling since firing head coach Robert Saleh, who was replaced by an interim coach. Meanwhile, Belichick has taken over as head coach at UNC and has stated that he did not come to the team to leave for the NFL.
