The Big Ten Conference announced Sunday that it fined Michigan and Ohio State $100,000 each for a postgame brawl that broke out after the Wolverines upset the Buckeyes in their rivalry game. The incident occurred as Michigan players tried to plant their flag in the middle of the field, which Ohio State did not take kindly to. Police used pepper spray to break up some of the melee.

The Big Ten Conference determined that the actions of both teams violated the Big Ten Sportsmanship Policy, citing a lack of respect and civility. The conference also noted that the incident jeopardized the safety of participants and bystanders.

The brawl was captured on video, showing several Ohio State players rushing the field where the Michigan players were centered around the flag. Ohio State defensive end Jack Sawyer snatched the flag away before throwing it on the ground.

Michigan running back Kalel Mullings told FOX Sports in an on-field interview that the incident was “bad for the sport” and “classless.” He added that Michigan had 60 minutes and four quarters to play the game without resorting to violence.

Michigan won the game 13-10. The Big Ten Conference considers the matter concluded and will have no further comment.
