Joe Biden Regrets Withdrawing from 2024 Presidential Election, Thinks He Could Have Defeated Trump
US President Joe Biden reportedly regrets his decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential election, stating that he believes he would have defeated Donald Trump last month despite negative poll indications. According to White House sources, Biden has also expressed disappointment with his choice of Merrick Garland as attorney general, citing Garland’s slow pace in prosecuting Trump for his role in the January 6, 2021 insurrection.
Biden stepped aside as the Democratic nominee in July, replaced by Kamala Harris, after mounting pressure from fellow Democrats citing polling evidence that showed him heading for a near-certain election drubbing from Trump. Harris ultimately lost the election, and Biden believes that he would have fared better if he had remained in the race.
The President’s misgivings about Garland are poignant, given that he announced Garland as his attorney general nominee just after the January 6 insurrection. At the time, Biden praised Garland for his commitment to restoring honor, integrity, and independence to the Justice Department. However, Biden now believes that Garland was too slow to investigate and prosecute Trump for his role in the insurrection, ultimately allowing Trump to avoid a politically damaging trial before the 2024 election.
Biden’s decision to seek a second term was also seen as a departure from his 2020 campaign vow to be a “transitional” figure, who would pass the torch after one term. Many Democrats believe that his decision to run again broke this promise and ultimately contributed to his defeat.
The President’s reflections on his 2024 campaign come as his single-term presidency draws to a close, with just over three weeks remaining.
