President-elect Donald Trump campaigned on a populist platform, promising to take on the political establishment and work for working families. As someone who has opposed disastrous trade agreements and high prescription drug prices, I look forward to working with him on legislation that would end the absurdity of Americans paying the highest prices in the world for prescription drugs and create good-paying jobs in the country.
I also support Trump’s proposal to cap credit card interest rates at 10%, and I will soon be introducing bipartisan legislation to protect Americans from being ripped off by the credit card industry.
Trump has also correctly pointed out that food corporations are “poisoning” our young people with highly processed foods, and I believe that the Trump administration and Congress must take on the greed of the food industry to create a healthier America.
In addition, Trump’s Labor Secretary nominee Lori Chavez-DeRemer has been supportive of the PRO Act, which would protect a worker’s right to join a union and bargain for better pay, benefits and working conditions. I look forward to working with the Trump administration to pass this legislation into law.
However, I have strong disagreements with some of Trump’s proposals. For example, providing hundreds of billions of dollars in additional tax breaks to large corporations and the wealthiest people in this country would be an outrage, and any new tax cuts should go to working families. Additionally, we must not throw millions of people off of the health care they have by making massive cuts to Medicaid and other public health programs.
Furthermore, we must not engage in mass deportation of 20 million people in this country, and we must raise the federal minimum wage to a living wage: $17 an hour.
I also believe that we must not allow billionaire oligarchs to buy our government, and we need real campaign finance reform which prevents billionaires from buying elections.
