Marcus Freeman, the head coach of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, is emerging as a prime candidate for the Chicago Bears’ head coaching job. According to the NFL Network, the Bears are interested in interviewing Freeman following their parting ways with Matt Eberflus midseason.
Notre Dame has appeared in the College Football Playoff Championship game and are looking to bring home their first national championship since 1988. Freeman is 33-9 in his tenure at the university, guiding the team to a 14-1 record this season after a 9-4 inaugural year in 2022 and a 10-3 follow-up season in 2023.
Despite likely being too distracted to entertain offers prior to next week’s title game against Ohio State, some speculate that the 39-year-old Freeman might consider an NFL opportunity at a later time due to the extent of the research the Bears have conducted on him.
Freeman was appointed Notre Dame head coach after Brian Kelly’s departure, and has garnered attention from Chicago as a contender for the coaching position. While the Bears intend to interview Brian Flores, Kliff Kingsbury, Todd Monken, and Arthur Smith among others, it remains to be seen if they will ultimately prioritize Freeman’s resume.
