Bears Pursue McCarthy for Top Job

The request to interview Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy is a fascinating one, given the team’s recent underperformance. Despite being on the hot seat, McCarthy’s current standing with owner Jerry Jones suggests he may not be in immediate danger. However, the Chicago Bears are eager to speak with the veteran coach and winner of Super Bowl XLV.

The Bears have requested permission to interview nine candidates so far, including current head coach McCarthy, who is one of only two head coaches on the list with recent experience. If McCarthy is indeed on shaky ground, the Cowboys may be reluctant to let him leave, especially if the Bears are interested.

As the Cowboys hold exclusivity rights, they can block the request until January 14, when McCarthy’s contract expires. However, they could grant permission before then, leaving the Bears to decide whether to pause their search or accelerate their process. The situation highlights the varying reputations of coaches within different organizations, and it remains to be seen whether the Bears will ultimately meet with the Cowboys’ coach.
