At least one person has died and between 60 to 80 others have been injured after a car plowed into a crowded Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany. The driver of the vehicle has been arrested.
Footage from social media shows the moment the black car drove directly into the crowd at the busy market, with dozens of people crowded at the market stalls. Some people can be seen running away from the car in panic, while others dive into the stalls as the car turns out of the plaza, leaving bodies and debris scattered across the narrow lane.
The city’s police measures are currently in place at the scene, with the prime minister of Saxony-Anhalt, Reiner Haseloff, on his way to the area. He described the event as “a terrible one, especially now in the days before Christmas.” Magdeburg is the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt, with a population of about 240,000.
The Christmas market is scheduled to be open from November 22 to December 29 and features 140 market stalls, an ice skating rink, a ferris wheel, and a children’s play area. This is a developing story that will be updated.
