Ashton Jeanty sheds light on NIL and offers valuable guidance for aspiring pros.

As the name, image, and likeness (NIL) landscape continues to evolve, former professional basketball player Ashton Jeanty is sharing his thoughts on the topic. Jeanty, who played in the NBA G League and overseas, recently spoke with Sports Business Journal about his perspective on NIL and offered advice to high school athletes navigating the complex world of college athletics and endorsement deals.

Jeanty believes that the NIL era is a “game-changer” for student-athletes, providing them with an opportunity to monetize their brand and gain financial stability. However, he also emphasizes the importance of understanding the rules and regulations surrounding NIL, as well as the potential consequences of getting involved in the wrong deals.

“When you’re a student-athlete, you have to be careful about who you’re partnering with and what you’re partnering with,” Jeanty said. “You have to make sure you’re not getting into anything that’s going to hurt your reputation or your brand in the long run.”

Jeanty advises high school athletes to focus on building their personal brand, including creating a strong social media presence and developing a unique identity that sets them apart from others. He also stresses the importance of staying focused on their education and athletic goals, rather than getting caught up in the excitement of making money.

“It’s easy to get caught up in the money and the fame, but at the end of the day, you’re still a student-athlete,” Jeanty said. “You have to stay focused on your education and your athletic goals. The money is just a bonus.”

Jeanty also warns high school athletes to be wary of agents and representatives who promise them the world but may not have their best interests at heart. He advises them to do their research and seek out reputable and experienced professionals who can help them navigate the NIL landscape.

“You have to be careful who you’re working with,” Jeanty said. “Make sure you’re working with people who have your best interests at heart and who can help you build your brand and your reputation.”

Overall, Jeanty’s message to high school athletes is one of caution and responsibility. While the NIL era presents exciting opportunities, it also requires a high level of maturity and awareness. By staying focused on their goals and being mindful of the potential pitfalls, high school athletes can navigate the complex world of college athletics and endorsement deals and achieve success both on and off the court.
