Apple enables AI by default in latest software update.

Apple Releases Software Update for iPhones, iPads, and Macs, Turning On Apple Intelligence by Default

Apple has released a software update for iPhones, iPads, and Macs that turns on Apple Intelligence by default for users with supported devices. The update, iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, and macOS Sequoia 15.3, also disabling AI summaries for news apps, which have been criticized for presenting inaccurate facts.

The move marks a milestone in the rollout of Apple Intelligence, the company’s suite of artificial intelligence features. Apple Intelligence is a critical service for the company as it seeks to distinguish its products from competitors with an integrated AI system.

The update turns on Apple Intelligence by default for new iPhone users or those upgrading to the latest software, expanding the number of users exposed to the software. Users can turn off the feature by navigating to the Apple Intelligence page in the Settings app.

The update also includes an update to disable Apple Intelligence for news and entertainment apps, following controversy over the feature’s ability to twist news headlines into inaccurate information. The feature was previously found to have generated harmful content and “hallucinations” that weren’t based in reality.

The company is also updating Apple Intelligence to show notifications generated by its AI in italics, distinguishing between those created by generative AI and those pushed by the app itself. Apple has also committed to re-releasing the AI-powered notification summaries for news apps in a future update.
