Americans are experiencing a “Great Detachment” at work due to lack of connection and engagement.

The Great Detachment: Why Americans Are Unhappy at Work

A new report from Gallup reveals that many workers are unhappy with their jobs, and the limited options to find a new one are contributing to an era of “The Great Detachment.” The share of Americans watching for or actively seeking a new job has increased to 51%, up from 45% in 2020. Meanwhile, Americans’ happiness at work has eroded, with only 18% reporting they are extremely satisfied with their jobs, down from 26% pre-pandemic.

Gallup researchers point to several factors contributing to workers’ dissatisfaction. One major issue is workplace disruptions, including layoffs, rehiring, and changes in work arrangements. The pandemic has also led to a shift towards remote work, which can be beneficial but also creates challenges for workers who want more flexibility.

Another factor is changing employee ideals and experiences. Employees now prioritize work-life balance, better compensation packages, and remote work flexibility. However, many workers feel that their employers are not meeting these expectations, leading to feelings of undervaluation and questioning their future.

Additionally, workers may be facing new pressures from clients and customers, with 56% reporting changes in customer expectations since the pandemic. This can lead to increased stress and dissatisfaction.

Gallup researchers also found that workers often don’t know what’s expected of them at work, with only 45% reporting they have clear expectations. This can lead to feelings of confusion and disconnection from the company’s mission.

To address these issues, Gallup recommends that companies provide clear expectations, connect each person’s job to the company’s mission, and prioritize employee well-being. Leaders can play a key role in this by clarifying and modeling the company’s mission and values, and ensuring the employee experience aligns with these values. By taking these steps, companies can build a stronger employer brand and create a more fulfilling work environment for their employees.
