North Carolina Man Charged with Providing Material Support to ISIS
A 29-year-old man from Durham, North Carolina, has been charged with providing material support to the Islamic State (ISIS) after he allegedly made plans to travel to Morocco in December 2024 to join the foreign terrorist organization.
According to federal court documents, Alexander Justin White, using the pseudonym “Sulaiman Al-Amriki,” used social media and encrypted messaging apps to express his support for ISIS and communicate with other ISIS supporters about his desire to join the group.
White’s online activities allegedly included posting about supporting ISIS and jihad, as well as having conversations with other ISIS supporters and an undercover FBI agent about his plans to travel to Morocco. In his communications, White expressed his desire to join ISIS, as well as his concerns about being caught by law enforcement and the efforts he was taking to avoid capture.
In his conversations with the undercover agent, White also discussed his support for violent attacks, including the killing of US military personnel and US citizens. He also expressed his desire to engage in combat with the US military.
White’s plans to join ISIS were foiled when he was arrested at Raleigh-Durham International Airport on December 4, 2024, as he was attempting to board a flight to Morocco. Authorities seized nearly $7,000 from him and confiscated multiple firearms from his apartment.
White’s case highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement in identifying and preventing terrorism, with FBI Director Christopher Wray saying that ISIS supporters who radicalize online in a matter of weeks are the most challenging type of terrorist threat the agency faces.
