WASHINGTON — An investigation is underway into the deadly crash of an American Airlines jetliner and an Army Black Hawk helicopter over the Potomac River on Wednesday night, killing all 64 people on board.

The PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ-700 aircraft was flying at about 300 feet on final approach into Reagan National’s Runway 33 when it collided with the helicopter, which was on an annual proficiency training flight. The cause of the collision is still unknown, but key questions are emerging, including about the altitude of the military helicopter.

Crash investigators have recovered a flight recorder from the helicopter and are reviewing evidence, including interviews with air traffic controllers and the two recorders from the airplane. Forty-one bodies have been recovered from the crash site, with 28 positively identified.

The NTSB is leading the investigation and has recovered flight data and cockpit voice recorders from the passenger jet. The agency is still gathering information and is unable to draw conclusions at this time.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the helicopter was on a training flight, and the FAA will restrict helicopter traffic around the Reagan National Airport area due to the investigation. The airport has closed two of its three runways and is expecting closures to last about a week.

President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that the helicopter “was flying too high, by a lot. It was far above the 200 foot limit.” Defense Secretary Hegseth also stated that a “mistake was made” and that there was an “elevation issue.”

The investigation is ongoing, with officials saying they will review the air traffic controllers’ past 72 hours or even weeks, including their training, hiring, and activities, to determine what led to the crash.
