Generative Artificial Intelligence: Progress to Slow in 2025, says Google CEO

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has predicted that generative artificial intelligence (AI) is unlikely to experience another groundbreaking breakthrough in 2025, at least, not more than it has already. Pichai believes that the low-hanging fruit has been harvested, and the next step will require deeper breakthroughs. He stated that incremental improvements will continue, mainly focusing on reasoning and sequence completion, but significant transformations will be scarce.

Despite this, Pichai emphasizes that AI will become increasingly useful for a wider audience, making it applicable in various industries. However, he believes that mainstream AI adoption will not come in the near future.

In contrast, some technology CEOs, such as OpenAI’s Sam Altman, are more optimistic. Altman has expressed a “no wall” viewpoint, suggesting that there are no limits to AI progress. Microsoft’s Satya Nadella also agrees with Pichai, referencing the Industrial Revolution’s example of slow growth before the technological advancements.

While significant progress may be slow to come, Pichai sees AI as having immense potential. He believes that computer programming will become accessible to millions more people 10 years from now.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the immediate future of AI, experts agree that the incremental advancements will lead to notable improvements in the field, especially in industries where practical applications are already being integrated.
