American Airlines Employee Killed in Tarmac Accident at Charlotte Douglas International Airport

An American Airlines employee was struck and killed by a ramp vehicle on the tarmac at Charlotte Douglas International Airport on Monday. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to the scene at 9:38 a.m. and pronounced the employee dead. The incident involved a single airline ramp vehicle, but no further details were provided.

The airport said it is working closely with airline and first responder partners in the ongoing investigation and is providing support as needed. American Airlines issued a statement expressing devastation at the accident and committing to providing support to those affected.

Despite growing concerns about air travel safety, the death of airport workers is relatively rare. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were only five deaths in airport operations in 2023 and three in 2022.
