New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ quest for a milestone touchdown pass ended in disappointment Sunday, as the team suffered a 40-14 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Rodgers, who hoped to reach the 500-touchdown mark, instead set a negative record by becoming the most sacked quarterback in NFL history.
The 37-year-old quarterback was sacked four times and threw two interceptions as the Jets fell to 4-12 on the season. The loss assured that the team will miss the playoffs for the fifth year in a row and its second stretch of three consecutive losing seasons.
Rodgers, who has played in 247 games, has been sacked 568 times in his career, surpassing Tom Brady’s total of 565 sacks. Russell Wilson, another prominent quarterback, has been sacked 556 times.
However, Rodgers may have a chance to catch the unofficial record held by Fran Tarkenton, who played before the NFL began counting sacks in 1982. Tarkenton is credited with 568 unofficial sacks. The Jets’ final game of the season is against the Miami Dolphins, which could give Rodgers a chance to catch or break Tarkenton’s record.
