NFL Insider Suggests 2 Veterans Could Compete for Cleveland Browns’ Starting QB Job in 2025
The Cleveland Browns and quarterback Deshaun Watson restructured his contract on Friday to create cap flexibility for the 2025 and 2026 seasons. While Watson is set to be back with the team in 2025, it’s unclear whether he’ll open the season as the starter.
According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the Browns might hold a veteran competition for the starting quarterback job. Two potential options he mentioned were Aaron Rodgers and Kirk Cousins.
Rodgers, currently a member of the New York Jets, could be an option if the team trades wide receiver Garrett Wilson. Wilson may want to leave the Jets if Rodgers returns for the 2025 season, as he has been vocal about his desire to play with a different quarterback.
Cousins, who was recently replaced by Michael Penix Jr. with the Atlanta Falcons, could also be a contender for the Browns’ starting job. If the team chooses to go the rookie quarterback route, they will likely have a high draft pick in 2025.
The Browns currently sit fourth in the draft order, making it possible for them to select a young quarterback to compete for the starting spot.
