Minnesota Vikings running back Aaron Jones has been struggling with ball security in his first season with the team, fumbling four times in his last five games. After his latest two-fumble game against the Arizona Cardinals, Jones revealed that his mother, Vurgess Jones, called for him to be benched.
Jones, a Pro Bowl running back, admitted that he was taken aback by his mother’s candor, saying he was “speechless” and didn’t know what to say. However, he acknowledged that his mother’s tough love is what he needs to improve his performance.
Head coach Kevin O’Connell has expressed his vote of confidence in Jones, but Jones’s mother seems to disagree. “She said, ‘They needed to sit you down,'” Jones recalled, adding that his mother told him, “I don’t know what’s going on, but they need to take him out of the game. They need to bench him right now.”
Jones has reviewed the film and hopes to improve before this weekend’s heavily anticipated matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. Despite his struggles, Jones remains optimistic and is working to correct his mistakes.
