“I remember it like it was yesterday. I was in my apartment, and I smelled something burning. At first, I thought it was just the pot I had cooked for lunch, but then I looked out the window, and… I couldn’t even believe what I was seeing. The whole block was on fire. Flames were licking at the windows, and I knew I had to get out of there, fast.
“The smoke was thick, and I couldn’t breathe. I was coughing, and my eyes were watering. I grabbed my medication and my phone, and I ran out into the street. I could hear the sirens in the distance, but they were far away. I thought I was going to die.
“I remember feeling this sense of calm wash over me, like I was in a dream. It was like I was outside my body, watching myself run down the street. I could see the apartment building I was fleeing, and it was like it was a tiny, insignificant thing in the distance.
“I heard my neighbor’s voice, screaming for help. I froze. I didn’t know what to do. I turned to go back for her, and then I saw the flames jumping from the second floor. I knew I had to keep moving.
“I kept running, but my lungs burned, and my eyes were blurring. I stumbled, and I fell. I sat up, and I looked around, and people were running towards me. I remember seeing this firefighter, and he was yelling, ‘Get up, get up!’ But I couldn’t get up. I was paralyzed with fear. I thought I was going to die.
“And then, I felt a pair of strong arms around me, lifting me up. I looked up, and it was this young hero, a firefighter. He carried me to safety, and I was convinced I was going to be okay. I was convinced I was going to make it out of there alive.
“I remember thinking, ‘I’m going to see my family again. I’m going to hold my loved ones close again.’ And I think that’s what kept me going, you know? The thought of my family. The thought of my friends. The thought of all the people who were counting on me to be okay.
“It’s funny, because people say that when you’re in a situation like that, your body goes into autopilot. And I think that’s true. But at the same time, there’s this other part of you that’s screaming, ‘Get out of here! Get to safety! Don’t stop moving!’ And I think that’s what happened for me.
“I was lucky. I was one of the lucky ones. And I’ll never forget the heroism of those firefighters, the bravery of the people who ran towards the fire instead of away from it. And I’ll never forget the sense of community, the sense of humanity that comes with something like this. People putting aside their differences, coming together to help those in need. It’s beautiful, and it’s what gets me through the tough days.
“I still get emotional thinking about it, because it’s just… it’s real. It’s real, you know? It’s not just a story or a make-believe scenario. It’s real, and it’s personal. And it’s what keeps me grounded, what keeps me human.” [The camera cuts to black, and the sound of the actor’s voice fades away.]
