Gremlins Finds Streaming Success Years After Its Release

The holiday season has brought success to some of the major streamer’s newer holiday hits, including Netflix’s animated family holiday film That Christmas and festive rom-coms like Our Little Secret and Hot Frosty. However, this time of year also sees some viewers looking for alternative options to the typical festive fare. One such alternative is the Christmas horror movie Krampus, which surged on streaming in December.

Another alternative holiday classic that is performing well on streaming is Gremlins. Originally released in 1984, Gremlins tells the story of a boy named Billy who accidentally breaks the rules concerning his new pet, a Mogwai, which unleashes a horde of monsters onto his town. Despite not being a conventional Christmas movie, its story is set around Christmastime.

According to Collider, Gremlins has become a streaming success, sitting at the no. 6 spot on the streamer Max. The film’s recent success is a testament to its enduring popularity, with a 86% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes and a reputation as an ’80s classic. The fact that it peaked around Christmastime could also indicate that Gremlins has officially reached Christmas film status.

Gremlins’ story follows Billy and his Mogwai companion Gizmo as they try to save the town of Kingston Falls from an army of little monsters. The film features a leading cast, including Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Corey Feldman, and Hoyt Axton.

With a runtime of 106 minutes and a budget of $11 million, Gremlins was released in 1984 and has since become a cult classic. The film’s success on streaming is a testament to its timeless appeal, with many viewers still enjoying it today.
