Two Jersey City dealership owners recently shared their concerns about Electric Vehicles (EVs) being the only vehicle in the household, citing a growing shortage of mechanics in the US. The industry is experiencing a shortage of workers due to an aging workforce, fewer program graduates, and rapid technological advancements.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there will be 67,800 average openings for automotive service technicians and mechanics each year through 2033, mainly to replace those who leave the occupation or transition to different fields. This shortage comes as millions of vehicle owners are already behind on maintenance repairs such as oil changes and tire rotations, which can be dangerous and costly.

Industry experts attribute the shortage to several factors, including the pay structure at larger shops, lack of value placed on “hands-on” work, and social media convincing people that there are easier ways to make a living. Additionally, the increased workload and long hours can make the job less desirable. The high price of new and used cars means people keep their cars longer, resulting in more repairs, and the average age of a used car on the road is over 12 years old.

Some programs, such as AAA and NAPA Autotech, are working to boost the workforce by launching apprenticeship programs to create the next generation of automotive repair professionals. The programs aim to recruit, train, and compensate technicians well, creating a culture that values feedback and offers professional development opportunities.

Experts agree that the solution to the technician shortage lies in recruiting, training, paying, and treating mechanics well, as well as addressing the stigma surrounding the industry. By doing so, shops can retain their workforce and attract new talent, ensuring the future of the automotive industry.
