28 Years Later: What to Expect from the Upcoming Sequel’s Real-Life Island Setting

Ad

Although the trailer for 28 Years Later only gives glimpses of the island setting, it’s easy to find out more about this real-life location. The upcoming sequel, directed by Danny Boyle and set 20 years after the collapse of civilization, takes place on Holy Island, or Lindisfarne, a small island off the coast of Northeast England. This real-life location was also where the film was shot, and its history and architecture make it the perfect setting for the plot.

Lindisfarne was historically known as a center of Celtic Christianity and is home to a rebuilt monastery and castle, as well as a few pubs, a hotel, and a museum. The isolated setting is already chilling, but the addition of ghoulish monuments, including a tall tower made of skulls, makes it an eerie location for the story.

The film’s main characters may have chosen Holy Island for its distance from the mainland, but it’s also likely that they have other, eerier motivations. The religious significance of Lindisfarne’s history could play into the plot as the movie’s protagonists seem to run into a cult, judging by the trailer.

The name “Holy Island” hints at the themes of the film, which will likely explore a post-apocalyptic cult in a secluded setting. Given Garland’s inspiration from Kes and Boyle’s earlier film, The Beach, Lindisfarne could be the site of a bloody and dark new take on the franchise’s story.

28 Years Later is set to be released in 2025, and the island setting is sure to add to the film’s eerie and suspenseful atmosphere.
